2017 has come to an end. The first couple days of the new year are typically filled with joy and excitement as people look forward to a year without mistakes in it yet. But as this cold weather begins to force you to stay indoors, here are my must see movies of 2017, to keep you occupied on those curl up with a blanket days.
Must see for everyone: Wonder Woman
You can’t miss this box office winner. Wonder Woman was not only the top grossing movie of the summer, but also the top grossing superhero movie of the year, and the top grossing film ever from a female director. This film might not be everyone’s favorite (I’ve heard a lot of people talk about how other superhero movies are better), but it’s something you should see so that you at least know what people are talking about. And hopefully you’ll enjoy the experience.
Must see for the sophisticated movie goer: Dunkirk
There is so much to say about Dunkirk. I tried to sum it up once before on this blog, and was unable to describe how incredible this film was. Everything from the cinematography, to the casting, to the production design, to the music was fantastic. The story is told in a way that is different from other war films. Don’t ask me to describe it to you, just watch it and let me know what you think!
Must see for the action adventure fan: Spider-man: Homecoming
There were a lot of action movies in 2017, so it was hard for me to pick a favorite. But Spider-man: Homecoming was funny, entertaining, and full of action sequences. Who doesn’t love a 15 year old from Queens trying to save the world with his spidey sense. I know you’ve seen the Spider-man story way to many times because of the previous 5 films, but trust me when I say this one is different and definitely worth the watch. Other honorable mentions Thor: Ragnorak, and Star Wars: The Last Jedi (I’ll admit I haven’t actually seen this one, but I’ve heard a lot of good things, plus Star Wars is always a good action adventure choice).
Must see for the romantic comedy fanatic: none
Sorry Rom Com fans, there weren’t any top notch films this year. There were so few Rom Coms that came out this year, and the ones that did were pretty terrible. If you’re looking for a good Rom Com to watch go back a few years and check out My Big Fat Greek Wedding, The Proposal, Sweet Home Alabama, or my personal favorite, Leap Year.
Must see for the whole family: Beauty and the Beast
The beast in this film might be scary for younger movie goers, but this live action version of the Disney animated classic is absolutely beautiful. While Disney didn’t try to bring any new interpretation to the story, it’s the nostalgia of the original film that makes this so good. Sit back and enjoy the beauty of the production design, the gorgeous costumes, the familiar songs, and the tale as old as time.
Must see for music lover: Baby Driver
This movie isn’t appropriate for the whole family because of language and violence. But for the adult music lover, this is a must see. The entire film is set to music, and revolves around the idea of the lead character being completely motivated and driven by music. It’s so interesting to see how each movement of the characters is choreographed, and car chase scenes are so precisely executed. The music selection is incredible and diverse, and will have you listening to the soundtrack over and over again.
