2018 has come to an end, and from all the social media posts I’ve seen in the last few days, it seems 2018 has been a hard year for everyone. But 2018 has been a great year for film! So as you try to push away the winter blues that are setting in, here are my must see movies of 2018! I had so much fun with this last year, I just had to do it again. To be completely honest, 2018 was so busy for me, I haven’t seen a lot of the movies I wanted to see, so this list will probably be lacking some great films.
Still on my list to see from 2018 is: Green Book, Instant Family, BlacKKKlansman, The Favourite, If Beale Street Could Talk, Roma, The 15:17 to Paris, and On the Basis of Sex. And some documentaries I want to see include RGB, Won’t You Be My Neighbor, and Minding The Gap. As you can see this was such a great year for film, I can’t keep up with all the movies! Which were your favorites?
Must see for everyone: Black Panther
Similar to 2017 when Wonder Woman swept the nation, Black Panther has done the same. It’s not your average comic book movie. Everything from the music, to the costumes, to the sweeping landscape shots is beautiful and fascinating. The story is compelling and the actors outperform almost every other comic book movie with the exception of Heath Ledger in The Dark Knight. If ever a comic book movie should win Best Picture at the Oscars, it’s this one. If you don’t really like comic book movies, watch this one anyway. This is a global phenomenon, and when you look back, it will be nice to know you were in on the hype.
Must see for the artistic / sophisticated movie goer: ???
I have a whole list of “sophisticated” / “Oscar worthy” films to watch that I just haven’t gotten to yet. I’m sure there is a film to fill this category, I just haven’t seen it yet. What would be your artistic / sophisticated film choice of the year?
Must see for the action adventure fan: Avengers: Infinity War
If you’ve followed the Marvel comic movies at all, you should see Infinity War. I thought the film would feel long, but it moves quickly, and I was on the edge of my seat wondering what would happen next. I can’t tell you anything else or I’ll spoil it for you.
Must see for the romantic comedy fanatic: Crazy Rich Asians
Ahhhh! This is by far my favorite film of 2018! Remember last year when no good rom coms came out? Well, Crazy Rich Asians has changed that. This isn’t your average rom com. It has heart! You’ll laugh, you’ll cry, and you’ll thank me.
Must see for the whole family: Mary Poppins Returns
I loved this film! Maybe it’s because I’m a Mary Poppins fan (I read 3 Mary Poppins books as a kid), or maybe it’s because I’ve loved Emily Blunt since The Devil Wears Prada. It could be because I’ve found a new love for Lin Manuel Miranda, or perhaps it was the Dick Van Dyke cameo that won me over. Maybe it was that Colin Firth (the real Mr. Darcy) was in the film, or just because I love musicals, and Disney, and all things cheerful? Who knows? It’s a fun one if you’re into those things. If not, that’s ok, maybe there is something else on this list that will pique your interest.
Must see for the music lover: A Star is Born
What an incredible film. I haven’t seen any of the previous versions of this story, but this Bradley Cooper / Lady Gaga rendition was so good. One of my favorite things about the film was watching the musical transformation of both characters, but especially of Ally’s character. As a fair warning, there are some scenes that aren’t appropriate for the whole family.
Must see Netflix movie: The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Society
I watched this Netflix movie on a whim. I was home one night scrolling through Netflix looking for something to watch, and I discovered the little film. It stars Lily James and is about a small community on the Island of Guernsey near England after World War II. Brew yourself a cup of tea and enjoy this touching story.
Must see sequel/remake: Ocean’s 8
I’m a big fan of Ocean’s 11, Ocean’s 12, and Ocean’s 13, so I was skeptical when I saw they were making a female version. But this stacked cast including, Sandra Bullock, Anne Hathaway, Mindy Kaling, Cate Blanchett, Helena Bonham Carter, Sarah Paulson, Awkwafina, Rihanna, Richard Armitage, and James Corden did a great job. The movie is true to the style of the original trilogy, and will make you wonder if they really can pull off the heist.
