It’s my favorite time of year! Time for my annual movie guide!
Unfortunately, I felt that there weren’t an abundance of great films in 2019. Maybe I missed seeing them, or didn’t hear about them, so if I did let me know in the comments. But overall 2019 was not an exciting year for the film the way previous years have been. I have high hopes for 2020, and I’m looking forward to seeing many movies in the coming months.
Must see for everyone: Dark Waters
Dark Waters was one of my favorite movies of the year. This film chronicles the true story of a lawyer going head to head with a large chemical company as more and more evidence is revealed that they have knowingly been exposing not only consumers to hazardous chemicals but their own employees as well. I think everyone should see this film because you can’t walk away without thinking about what we as consumers purchase and use without once asking what it’s made out of or if it’s safe. I’m definitely rethinking which products a purchase and I’m doing more research on what they are made out of, and how the workers creating the products are treated.
Must see for the artistic / sophisticated movie goer: Once Upon A Time In Hollywood
Quenten Tarantino has made this period piece about a horrific murder seem timeless and exciting. Leonardo DiCaprio and Brad Pitt deliver excellent performances as a Hollywood “has-been” and his stunt double. The movie is shot stunningly and has you hooked until the end. The murder scene is quite graphic, for anyone bothered by that, myself included (I may or may not have hidden under a blanket during that scene).
Must see for the action adventure fan: Spiderman: Far From Home
There were a lot of action movies to come out in 2019, but Spiderman: Far From Home was by far my favorite. The comedy is a huge reason I’ve rated this one the top, because the movie doesn’t take itself too seriously the way many action films do. This is a fun one for any night in.
Must see for the romantic comedy fanatic: Little Women?
Little Women doesn’t exactly count as a romantic comedy. Ok, it doesn’t count at all. But there really weren’t any good romantic comedies this year, and Little Women was a fantastic film. There will be moments when you are laughing, but likely moments when you are teary eyed as well. Greta Gerwig did a fantastic job with this new telling of a most beloved story.
Must see for the whole family: Toy Story 4
If you haven’t seen Toy Story 4, drop your plans for the evening and watch this movie. Sign up for a free trial of Disney + and watch it already. You won’t regret it. I don’t even want to tell you why, because I don’t want to spoil anything. What I can say is that our favorite toys come back for yet another hilarious and heartwarming story.
Must see for music lover: The Lion King?
Is it bad if I say I haven’t actually seen The Lion King? Well, I haven’t, but it was well received by most audiences and had many songs that people are still raving about. Don’t even get fans started about Beyonce being snubbed for an Oscar nomination. This is on my list to see this winter.
Must see Netflix movie: The Irishman?
Is this a must see? The Oscars and critics would say yes. Do I like mobster movies? No. For me this wasn’t a must see, and to be honest I fell asleep for an hour, woke up and the movie was still going. Thank you Scocese for a 3.5 hour film. For those that like Scorcese, mobsters, Robert De Niro, Al Pacino, and Italians in the 50s, take the time to watch it. For anyone else…you can probably skip it.
Must see sequel/remake: Avengers: Endgame
This movie was the culmination of the entire Marvel franchise. 22 films in 11 years. I don’t want to spoil anything, and I will say it’s far more interesting if you’ve seen the films before it. But this is definitely a must see.
